Ruling on gathering donations for the dead, Sheikh Salih Al Fawzan

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم والحمد لله وصلى الله وسلم على نبينا محمد 

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, All the praises and thanks be to Allah, May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammed.

هذا السؤال نلقيه على فضيلة شيخنا الشيخ صالح الفوزان حفظه الله

We put this question to our eminent sheikh, Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan, may Allah protect him.

وهو أن بعض العوائل إذا توفي عندهم الشخص

When a person dies, some families

قاموا بإرسال رسائل يطلبون التبرع له بمبلغ مال

send messages asking for donations, 

 

يُجعل له وقف ببناء مسجد أو حفر آبار

A waqf (endowment) is left for him by building a Mosque or digging wells.

 

وربما يحددون مبلغ بكذا وأحيانا لا يحددونه

They may ask for a specific amount of money, but not always,

 

فما رأي فضيلتكم حفظكم الله تعالى

so what is your opinion, may Allah preserve you?

 

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم والحمدالله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, praise be to Allah, and peace be upon the messenger of Allah, the members of his family, and his companions.

هذا العمل مبتدع ولا يجوز

This act is a bid’a (innovation within religion) and is not permissible.

وربما يحرج المسؤول فيجيب على ما سألوا وهو غير راض بذلك

And perhaps the person being asked will feel embarrassed and make a donation, even though he doesn't want to.

لكنه ينجبر على الموافقة فلا يجوز هذا العمل والله أعلم

However, he is forced to agree, so this action is not permissible, and Allah knows best.
