Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 10
BITESIZE TAFSIR
Disease' here refers to the disease of hypocrisy. The statement that 'Allah has intensified this disease' means that He does not punish the hypocrites immediately but allows them to indulge in their hypocrisy and exult in the success of their ruses. This feeling of success intensifies their hypocrisy.
Surah Baqarah Verse 10 |
2:10 Al-Baqarah
In their hearts is disease, so Allฤh has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
๐ฅ The Meaning of `Disease' in this Ayah
๐This ฤyah makes clear the evil qualities of the hypocrites, so that they are known by it, and so that Muslims beware from imitating them.
Furthermore, it gives reason as to why they act deceptively; in their hearts is a defect that increased until it reached the point of evil.
๐In their hearts is disease: Meaning doubt, hypocrisy, resentment, and jealousy.
The disease is due to their subsidence with the dunyฤ and heedlessness concerning the ฤkhirah.
๐In the Noble Qur’ฤn, the believers were called aแธฅyฤ (ุฃَุญَْูุงุก - living), because they benefitted from life by doing righteous deeds and so they became triumphant with eternal life in the ฤkhirah And the kuffฤr (disbelievers) were called amwฤt (ุฃَู
َูุงุชًุง – dead), because they did not benefit from their lives, nor will they attain eternal life.
๐So Allฤh has increased their disease: Meaning, they doubted the Quran, just as they doubted the other books before it. This doudt has just increased
๐And for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie. Lying is information about a matter that differs from what it actually is, and it is all prohibited.
๐ Indeed, hypocrites have two features:
Disbelief, which Allฤh has threatened the one who falls into it with a great punishment
Lying, which Allฤh has threatened the one who commits it with a severe torment.
๐Allฤh made evident that the punishment of the ฤkhirah is excruciating, because the punishment of the dunyฤ may have no pain associated with it.
Allฤh (the Mighty and Majestic) informs (us) that the punishment of the ฤkhirah is an extremely severe punishment, not like the punishment of the dunyฤ.
๐ฎ REFLECTION/PONDER
☀️ Ask Yourselve: Does my behaviour/attitude change with the company of people?
๐ฅ If the answer is "Yes" then we need to seek tawbah and ask Allah swt to remove hypocrisy from our hearts. In order to cleanse our hearts from any disease of heart, we should actively seek knowledge of deen. Only knowledge of Quran can remove doubts from our hearts and make our desires subservient to the pleasure of Allah swt.
๐ฎ Moreover, it is very important to know that lying is a major sin and there is a painful punishment for the liars in the Hereafter. We should keep in mind that even casual joking and exaggeration are also considered as lies.
๐ According to a hadith of Prophet saw, a believer can be miser, a believer can be a coward but he/she can never be a liar. Breaking promises and betraying trusts are also characteristics of hypocrites according to another hadith.
๐๐ป May Allah forgive us and cleanse our hearts from all the diseases of heart, Ameen!
