Abandoning the Book of Allah and practicing Magic

Surah Baqarah Verse 102-103
Before the revelation of the Qur’an, the devils used to ascend to heaven and eavesdrop on the conversations of the angels about what will occur on the earth regarding death, other incidents or unseen matters.

They would convey this news to the soothsayers, and the soothsayers would in turn convey the news to the people. The people would believe what the soothsayers told them as being true. When the soothsayers trusted the devils, the devils started to lie to them and added other words to the true news that they heard, to the extent of adding seventy false words to each true word. The people recorded these words in some books. Soon after, the Children of Israel said that the Jinns know matters of the Unseen.

When Suleiman (Solomon) ‘alayhi salaam was sent as a prophet, he collected these books in a box and buried it under his throne; any devil that dared getting near the box was burned. Suleiman ‘alayhi salaam said, “I will not hear of anyone who says that the devils know the Unseen, but I will cut off his head.” When Suleiman ‘alayhi salaam died and the scholars who knew the truth about him perished, there came another generation. To them, the devil materialized in the shape of a human and said to some of the Children of Israel, “Should I lead you to a treasure that you will never be able to use up?” They said, “Yes!” He said, “Dig under this throne,” and he went with them and showed them Prophet Suleiman’s throne. They said to him, “Come closer.” He said, “No. I will wait for you here, and if you do not find the treasure then kill me.” They dug and found the buried books, and Satan said to them, “Suleiman only controlled the humans, devils and birds with this magic.” Thereafter, the news that Suleiman ‘alayhi salaam was a sorcerer spread among the people, and the Children of Israel adopted these books. When Muhammad salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam came, they disputed with him relying on these books, hence Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala defended His Prophet (as He protects His friends) and said, “It was not Suleiman (Solomon) who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved.”

The Story of Harut and Marut – the Two Angels sent as a Trial
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “…and that which revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].’ And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between man and his wife.”

There is a difference of opinion regarding this story. It was said that this ayah denies that anything was sent down to the two angels, as Al-Qurtubi stated. He then referred to the ayah, “It was not Suleiman who disbelieved,” and said that the negation applies in both cases.

The Jews claimed that Jibreel (Gabriel) and Mika’el (Micheal) brought magic down to the two angels, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala refutes this claim. Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu has been reported to have said, “Allah did not send magic down.”

Mufti Muhammad Shafi ‘Usmani writes in his tafseer (Maarif-ul-Qur’an):

There was a time when black magic had grown popular in the world, particularly in Babylon. Seeing its astonishing efficacy, ignorant people began to confuse its effects with the miracles of the prophets, and to suppose that the two were identical in nature. Some even looked upon magicians as being holy men, and worthy of being obeyed; still others actually started learning and practicing black magic as if it were a good deed bearing a divine sanction.

This extraordinary veneration for magic and magicians had become a potent source of misguidance. In order to eradicate this misunderstanding, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent down two angels Harut and Marut. The angels informed the people the true nature of magic and its different forms, so that they should distinguish it from the miracles of prophets, and keep away from obeying magicians and practicing magic themselves. Just as the prophethood is divinely confirmed through miracles, signs and rational or other arguments, in the same way the angelical nature of Harut and Marut was confirmed on the basis of different signs and arguments, so that people should listen to them attentively and follow their guidance.

In short, the two angels came down to Babylon, and started the work assigned to them. They explained the basic principles of magic, its different forms and the specific formulas, and then dissuaded the people from involving in these activities or with the magicians.

All sorts of people started coming to the angels for seeking information about the nature and the specific formulas of a magic lest ignorance should lead them into error. In order to provide the correct teaching on this subject and to protect the people from error, the angels were scrupulous enough to make it a point to warn them of possible dangers in giving them the information. They insisted on making it quite clear that in allowing them to provide this kind of information to the people, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala intended to put His servants through a trial. He would see who uses this knowledge for protecting his emaan (faith) by recognizing evil and avoiding it, and who falls into misguidance by adopting evil that he has come to recognize as evil – a choice which can easily lead one to Kufr (disbelief).

The angels repeatedly advised to seek this dangerous information only with a good intent and to remain steadfast in this good intent, and not to misuse the knowledge to earn perpetual damnation.

Learning Magic is Kufr (Disbelief)
In the ayah Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].”

Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu said, “When someone came to the angels to learn magic, they would discourage him and say to him, ‘We are only a test, so do not fall into disbelief.’ They had knowledge of what is good and evil and what constitutes belief or disbelief, and they thus knew that magic is a form of disbelief. When the person who came to learn magic still insisted on learning it, they commanded him to go to such and such place, where if he went, Satan would meet him and teach him magic. When this man would learn magic, the light (of faith) would depart him, and he would see it shining (and flying away) in the sky. He would then proclaim, ‘O my sorrow! Woe unto me! What should I do?’”

Hasan Al-Basri said that this ayah means, “The angels were sent with magic, so that the people whom Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala willed would be tried and tested. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala made them promise that they would not teach anyone until first proclaiming, ‘We are a test for you, do not fall into disbelief.’”

Commenting on this ayah Ibn Jurayj said, “No one dares practice magic except a disbeliever. As for the Fitnah, it involves trials and freedom of choice.”

The scholars who stated that learning magic is disbelief relied on this ayah for evidence. They also mentioned the hadeeth that Abu Bakr Al-Bazzar recorded from ‘Abdullah, which states,

“Whoever came to a soothsayer or a sorcerer and believed in what he said, will have disbelieved in what Allah revealed to Muhammad.”

Causing Separation between the Spouses is a Shaytanic Act
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “…and yet, they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife…” The people learned magic from Harut and Marut and indulged in evil acts that included separating spouses, even though spouses are close to, and intimately associate with each other. This is the devil’s work.

Muslim recorded that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said that the Messenger of Allah salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said,

“Satan erects his throne on water and sends his emissaries among the people. The closest person to him is the person who causes the most Fitnah. One of them (a devil) would come to him and would say, ‘I kept inciting so-and-so, until he said such and such words.’ Iblees says, ‘No, by Allah, you have not done much.’ Another devil would come to him and would say, ‘I kept inciting so-and-so, until I separated between him and his wife.’ Satan would draw him closer and embrace him, saying, ‘Yes, you did well.’”

Separation between a man and his wife occurs here because each spouse imagines that the other spouse is ugly or ill-mannered, etc.

LESSON:

Causing separation between the spouses is a devilish act. Parents and parents-in-laws who provoke their children to usurp the rights of their spouse; create misunderstanding; and do not let the couple live a peaceful and pleasant life should fear Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. If you have married your children, consider them adults and stop interfering in their lives. Families should neither ask the couple their private talk nor should the spouses reveal their secrets. A couple should live as clothing which being close beautifies the person and conceals its faults.

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala guide us and bless the spouses marital love and bliss, ameen.

Allah’s Appointed Term Supersedes Everything
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.”  Mufti Muhammad Shafi ‘Usmani writes that this shows us that causes in themselves and by themselves cannot produce the effects one usually associates with them. It is Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala who creates the effects as much as the causes.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala allows magicians to adversely affect whomever He wills and saves whomever He wills from them. Sorcerers never bring harm to anyone except by Allah’s leave.

LESSON:

When someone is tested in their life, they blame it on their relatives or anyone who ‘they think’ is their enemy. In the ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala informs us that nobody can harm us unless He wills that we be harmed. Why would He will that we be harmed? It is to test us and to see our reaction. What words come out of our mouth? What opinion we hold about others? How impure our hearts and minds are (that we will think ill of someone)? It is also because of our own doing. Perhaps, we have distanced from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala? Perhaps, we are not vigilant about our personal hygiene and keeping our houses clean? Know that the Shayateen live in dirty places. If you wish to keep the Shayateen away don’t miss your daily recitation of the Qur’an; recite Surah Al-Baqarah every three days or play it on a player (and listen to it attentively), recite your words of remembrance and the supplications for protection, especially Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas. Seek refuge with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala from the inciting of the devil. Remember that if you maintain good ties with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, then He will not let you go.

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala protect us all, ameen.

“And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them,” learning magic harms one’s religion and brings no benefit compared to the harm that it causes. Those who engage in magic will have no share in the Hereafter. This should alarm us and we should see where we are putting our energies.

If one has been afflicted by magic then they should only approach authentic scholars and avoid going to quacks, peers and sorcerer.

“And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew,” they preferred magic over faith and following the Messenger. Had they believed in Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and His Messenger and avoided the prohibitions, then Allah’s reward for these good deeds would have been better for them than what they chose and preferred for themselves.

Proofs of Muhammad’s ﷺ Prophethood

Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 99 to 101, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Aya
Surah Baqarah Verse 99-100
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says that He has sent clear ayaat or clear signs that testify to Muhammad’s ﷺ prophethood. The Qur’an contains the knowledge that the People of the Book hide, and the stories of the earlier generation. This knowledge is known to the Rabbis and scholars. They know the sections of the Torah that they have altered and rulings that they have changed. All the signs testify to the truth that Muhammad ﷺ was sent with and the clear signs that he brought which he did not learn or acquire from mankind.

Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu commented that this ayah means: You recite and convey this Book to them day and night, although you are an Ummi (unlettered) who never read a book. Yet, you inform them of what they have (in their own Books). This fact should serve as an example, a clear sign and a proof against them, if they but knew. Those who disbelieve in the signs are the Fasiqoon (defiantly disobedient). Because they don’t want to act on the commands therefore, the best solution that they could come up with was to deny the ayaat altogether.

After sending the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reminded the Jews of their covenant with Him, especially concerning Muhammad ﷺ, Malik bin As-Sayf said, “By Allah! Allah never made a covenant with us about Muhammad, nor did He take a pledge from us at all.” It was then that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala revealed this ayah, “Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant a party of them threw it away?” Hasan Al-Basri commented: There is not a promise that they make, but they break it and abandon it. They make a promise today and break it tomorrow.

LESSON:

We, as Muslims, have made several pledges with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. When He created us He asked us if He was not our Lord, all of us confirmed that indeed, He is our Lord. Being His creation we must submit to Him. We cannot give preference to our desires over what He commands us to do.

We seek refuge with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala from disobedience and transgression, and we ask Him to He make us His humble servants, ameen.

Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 99 to 101, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Aya
Surah Baqarah Verse 101
As-Suddi commented: When Muhammad came, the Jews living in Madinah wanted to contradict and dispute with him using the Torah. However, the Torah and the Qur’an affirmed each other. So the Jews gave up on using the Torah, and took to the Book of Asaf, and the magic of Harut and Marut, which indeed did not conform to the Qur’an. Hence Allah’s statement,

“…as if they did not know [what it contained].” Qatadah said that it means they knew the truth, but abandoned it, hid it and denied the fact that they even had it.

LESSON:

Why did the Jews threw their Book behind their backs and followed that which they desired? It is because they gave more preference to their likes and dislikes, and not what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala desired.

Where is the Qur’an in our homes? Is it on the top most shelf? And is it only taken down when someone dies in the family or a calamity strikes? What are *we* doing with the Book of Allah?

When something is important to someone, they keep it close at hand. For example, you have to check your daily messages and perhaps, news headlines. You keep your phones and other devices nearby for an easy access. Many of us wake up, and the first thing that we check is our phone. How many of us, remember Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala as soon as our eyes open up? How many of us thank Him in the initial seconds of knowing we have survived another day?

Questions to Ask Yourself:

• Where is the Qur’an kept in my home?
• If it is on a shelf, then how high is it?
• How often do I open it up?
• If not daily, then why not?
• Why can’t I find time for the Qur’an? What is keeping me occupied?

If we can exert our resources for the success of this world, then we can certainly exhaust ourselves in striving for the Hereafter. Many people complain that they cannot understand the Qur’an because it is in a foreign language. Many of the people who have this complaint are not native English speakers, yet they know English. How did you learn English? By regularly going to school and attending the classes. If you can learn a new language to survive the challenges of this world, can you not learn the language of the Qur’an for the success in the Hereafter?

Yes, it requires commitment. But the results will be lasting.

Choosing Some Angels to believe in over Others is Disbelief

Anas ibn Malik radhiAllahu ‘anhu narrated when ‘Abdullah bin Salam radhiAllahu ‘anhu heard of the arrival of the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah, he was working on his land. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “I am going to ask you about three things which nobody knows except a Prophet: What will be the first portent of the Hour? What will be the first meal taken by the people of Paradise? Why does a child resemble its father, and why does it resemble its maternal uncle?” Allah’s Messenger said, “Jibreel has just told me the answers.” ‘Abdullah said, “He (i.e. Jibreel), among all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews.” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ recited the ayah,

“Whoever is an enemy to Jibreel (Gabriel), for indeed he has brought it (this Qur’an) down to your heart).”

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ then said, “The first portent of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the east to the west; the first meal of the people of Paradise will be the caudate lobe of the liver of fish. As for the child resembling his parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and his discharge is first, the child will resemble the father. If the woman has a discharge first, the child will resemble her side of the family.”

On that ‘Abdullah bin Salam radhiAllahu ‘anhu said, “I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and you are the Messenger of Allah.” ‘Abdullah bin Salam further said, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! The Jews are liars, and if they should come to know about my conversion to Islam before you ask them (about me), they will tell a lie about me.” The Jews came to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, and ‘Abdullah went inside the house.

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ asked (the Jews), “What kind of man is ‘Abdullah bin Salam?” They replied, “He is the best among us, the son of the best among us, our master and the son of our master.” Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “What do you think if he would embrace Islam?” The Jews said, “May Allah save him from it.” Then ‘Abdullah bin Salam radhiAllahu ‘anhu came out in front of them saying, “I testify that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” Thereupon they said, “He is the evilest among us, and the son of the evilest among us.” And they continued talking badly about him. Ibn Salam said, “This is what I feared, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” [Bukhari]

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said, “Whoever is an enemy of Jibreel (Gabriel), for indeed he has brought it (this Qur’an) down to your heart by Allah’s permission,” meaning whoever becomes an enemy of Angel Jibreel let him know that he is Ruh Al-Qudus (the pure spirit) who brought down the Glorious Thikr (Qur’an) to the heart of Muhammad ﷺ by Allah’s leave. Hence, he is a messenger from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala . Whoever takes a messenger as an enemy, will have taken all the messengers as enemies. Further, whoever believes in one messenger, is required to believe in all of the messengers. Whoever rejects one messenger, he has rejected all of the messengers.

A similar statement has been said in Surah An-Nisa,

“Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers and wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers (by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, ‘We believe in some but reject others.’ They are in truth disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment.” (An-Nisa 4: 150-151)

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala decreed that they are disbelievers, because they believe in some prophets and reject others. This is the same with those who take Jibreel as an enemy because Jibreel did not choose missions on his own, but by the command of his Lord,

“And we (angels) descend not except by the command of your Lord,” (19: 64)

“And truly, this (the Qur’an) is a revelation from the Lord of all that exists. Which the trustworthy Ruh (Jibreel) has brought down. Upon your heart (O Muhammad ﷺ) that you may be (one) of the warners,” (26:192-194).

Al-Bukhari reported that Abu Huraira radhiAllahu ‘anhu said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

“Allah said, ‘Whoever takes a friend of Mine as an enemy, will have started a war with Me.’”

Therefore, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala became angry with those who took Jibreel ‘alayhi salaam as an enemy.

The fact that the Last Messenger came from the Arabs and not the Jews, was not Jibreel’s ‘alayhi salaam choice or error. He did what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala commanded him to do. Further, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,

“…confirming that which was before it, and as guidance and good tidings for the believers,” meaning, the Qur’an confirms what is in the previous Books (as they were first revealed), and it contains guidance for the believers and good news of Paradise for them.

LESSON:

We learn three attributes of the Qur’an. It is Musaddiq (confirms/testifies), Huda (guidance), and Bushra (good news/ glad tiding). Qur’an is a source of guidance; therefore, we should take our guidance from this Book and not what people say or do. We should be curious to know what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala expects from us. We should ask Him to show us the path that He has chosen for us.

The Qur’an has also been called shifa (healing) as we read in Surah Isra ayah 82.

“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe,” (17:82).

Therefore, whenever you are feeling lost, depressed or constricted stop worrying (or crying), and instead pick up the Qur’an. Go on reading and Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will alleviate sadness and anxiety from your heart. The scholars say that if you commit to the Qur’an, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will give you more. The more here means that He will answer the du’as that you made and those that you did not make. And, whatever He will give you in return for your association with His Book will be much better than you had imagined.

We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to make us from the bearer of the Qur’an and the people of the Qur’an, ameen.

Important Note: The scholars said that the words Jibr, Mik and Israf (at the beginning of angels’ names) all mean ‘worshiper’ while ‘eel’ or ‘il’ means Allah. For example, Jibr-eel: Worshiper of Allah. Similarly, Isra-eel means worshiper of Allah. This was a title of Prophet Yaqoob ‘alayhi salaam. It is similar to names such as, ‘Abdullah, ‘Abdur Rahman, and so forth. As in these names ‘Abd is a constant similarly ‘eel or ‘il’ is a constant in Jibreel, Mika’el and Israfeel.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then said,

“Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His Angels and His Messengers and Jibreel and Mika’el (Michael) – then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.” Believe in all the messengers is part of our faith. Disbelieving in any one of them will lead to kufr (disbelief).

Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) and Mika’el (Michael), have been specifically mentioned, although they are included among the angels who were messengers. It is because this ayah was meant to support Jibreel the emissary between Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and His Prophets. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala also mentioned Mika’el here, because the Jews claimed that Jibreel was their enemy and Mika’el was their friend. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala informed them that whoever is an enemy of either of them, then he is also an enemy of the other as well as Allah’s. We should state here that Mika’el sometimes descended to some of Allah’s Prophets, although to a lesser extent than Jibreel, because this was primarily Jibreel’s task, and Israfeel is entrusted with the job of blowing the Trumpet on the Day of Judgment.

It is recorded in the Saheeh that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would wake up at night (Tahajjud), he would supplicate,

Dua at waking for Tahazzud
Dua at waking for Tahazzud

LESSON:

Allah’s statement, “then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers” informs us that whoever takes a friend of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala as an enemy, then he has taken Allah as an enemy, and whoever treats Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala’s friend as an enemy, then he shall be Allah’s enemy. Indeed, whoever is an enemy of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then he will lose in this life and the Hereafter.

It is important to love the friends of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. Whoever does not do so then all his deeds will be wasted no matter how many good deeds he performs.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala helps His friends. They please Him and He is pleased with them. They remember Him in good times, He does not leave them in their testing times. Rather, He hastens to solve their problems and make things easier for them.

Who are the Friends of Allah (Awliya Allah)?

► They love and remember Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in their hearts

► They remember Him with their tongues in solitude and in a crowd

► They do the deeds that please Him and abandon those which displease Him

If you want to be helped by Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and become His friend then these are the three distinctive qualities that you must have. May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala fill our hearts and tongues with His remembrance and love. May He make us of those with whom He is pleased, ameen.

Ayaat 93-95 the raising of Mount Tur

Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 93 to 95, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Surah Baqarah Verse 93-95
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reminds the Jews of their errors, breaking His covenant, transgression and defiance. He raised the Mount Tur above them so that they would believe and agree to the terms of the covenant. Yet, they broke it soon afterward.

While giving the Torah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala had instructed the Children of Israel to hold it firmly…and hear. They replied,

“We have heard and disobeyed.” The word asayna [عَصَيْنَا] is from the root ayn-saad-ya which means ‘to rebel, disobey, oppose, resist and transgress’.

LESSON:

By saying, hear, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala tells us that listening is the first step towards action. He who does not listen attentively cannot act or follow instructions. Therefore, people should be invited and encouraged to listen to the Qur’an and understand its meaning. Merely, reading it is not enough.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “…their hearts absorbed [the worship of] the calf because of their disbelief.” The reason that they heard and disobeyed was that their hearts were filled with the love of the calf. They had lived many years under the slavery of the Egyptians who worshiped cows. Living with them, the Children of Israel too started revering the cow. Their hearts were now attached to other things that blocked them from submitting before Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. Therefore, they bluntly said: We hear and disobey.

LESSONS:

When the heart is filled with the love of something other than Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, then such a heart does not receive guidance. This is how the heart has been created. It has to hook itself to something. If you do not hook it up with the Creator, it will get attached to anything of the world. We have to cleanse our heart from false attachments and open it up to guidance and understanding the message of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

Before you fall for the dunya, fall for Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in love and submission.

If one’s heart is not cleansed then the study of the Qur’an won’t change them either. Our way of looking at things should not remain the same after studying the Qur’an. The student of Qur’an transforms into a new person. He looks at the world from a new perspective. He works in the dunya, but his focus is the Hereafter – where he is going to stay forever. He does not indulge in what is temporary. But who experiences this? A person who has a pure heart and receives guidance; such a person shows by his actions that indeed the Qur’an is impacting him for the better. He is humble, kind-hearted, and compassionate, but not attached to this world.

When a person does not find interest in religious matters or in Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, then his heart is indulged in other things. When the love of other things reside in one’s heart, then it is difficult to obey Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

There remains a constant need to check our hearts.

[Hook Up with Allah, Allah will Hook You Up]

“Worst indeed is that which your faith enjoins on you if you are believers,” the Children of Israel are being criticized that if you are true believers, as you claim, then it is strange that your faith call you to disobedience and evil deeds. They disobeyed Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and the prophets that were sent to them; they killed some of them and planned to kill some [‘Eesa (Jesus) and Muhammad ﷺ]. What kind of a faith is this that is teaching you to disobey Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and go against the teachings of the Torah?

LESSON:

One’s faith remains incomplete unless his actions conform to it. If one truly loves Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, as many of us claim, then we will never disobey Him.  How true are we in our claims of loving Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and His Messenger ﷺ the most? Do our actions conform to what we say? Many of us are doing things in the name of Islam that are only bringing us shame. There are those deluded from their purpose in this life and their identity as a Muslim. In the name of assimilation, they are adopting things that our religion clearly forbids us from doing. How are we going to stand before Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and give an account of our deeds?

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala guide us and correct what is wrong within us, ameen.

Ayah 94 – Calling the Jews to invoke Allah to destroy the Unjust Party

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says if the abode of the Hereafter is really for the Children of Israel as they claim then what are they doing in this world? They should ask for death and go enjoy the pleasures (as they claim) that await them.

Note that it is not permissible for one to ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for death because one’s life has been entrusted to them. It has been given to us so that we can get our scales raised in the Hereafter by doing righteous deeds. It should not be wasted in laghw, pursuing temporary pleasures while forgetting the accountability that awaits us in the Hereafter. When you are being tested in life ask for Allah’s help and do not indulge in what is forbidden. Remember, we are not here forever. Our real home is in the Hereafter in the company of the Prophets, the Siddiqeen, the Shuhada and the Sauleheen, in sha Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ used to say, “Remember, more often the destroyer of pleasures.” [at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa’i, ibn Majah]

He also taught us a du’a that is to be said when one has given up on this world,

Dua When tired of life
Dua When tired of  life

The Jews had corrupted their belief about the Hereafter. They believed they are the chosen people; they are the children of the prophets; they are the children of Allah (we seek refuge with Allah from uttering such a statement)…and because of this, they believed, they will definitely be entering Paradise.

Ayah 95

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala responds to their false claim: If the home of the Hereafter is especially for you then you should long for death. He adds, “But they will never wish for it ever, because of what their hands have put forth.” They will never ask for death because they know what their deeds were. They have defied and denied the prophets. They have altered the Torah according to their liking. They refused to accept Muhammad ﷺ while acknowledging his description matches with the Torah.

They were called to invoke Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to destroy the lying group, be it them or the Muslims. When the Jews declined, everyone was sure of their wrong, for had they been sure of their claims, then they would have accepted the proposal. Their lies were thus exposed after they declined the offer to invoke the curse.

At this ayah, Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu commented had they wished death that day, no Jew would have remained alive on the face of the earth.

This, invoking Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for death, is called Mubahalah. And we are forbidden to do so as explained in the beginning.

Ibn Jarir said in his tafseer: We were told that the Prophet ﷺ said,

“Had the Jews wished for death, they would have died and seen their seats in the Fire. And, those who invoked such curse against Allah’s Messenger would have found no families or property had they returned to their homes.”

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala ends the ayah by saying He knows who the wrongdoers are.

LESSON:

We should watch our tongues and never claim our righteousness. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala knows how honest we are in our speech and how righteous we are. We should fear the Day when we will meet Him for accountability. We should strive to please Him.

O Allah! We ask You for an easy reckoning, and the company of the prophets, the truthful, the martyred and the righteous. Allahumma ameen.

Ayah 96 – Long Life won’t save One from Accountability

Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 93 to 95, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Surah Baqarah Verse 96
This world is a prison for the believer and Paradise for the disbeliever. He who longs to meet Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is not afraid of death. He knows death is a reality of life and it will occur no matter what we do. If however, one is not prepared for death or they are too immersed in dunya, they will wish that their death time is delayed. Talking about this Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,

The word arasa [أَحْرَصَ] is from the root ha-ra-sad which means ‘to desire ardently, covet, hanker, exert oneself, take extraordinary pains to obtain,’ etc. The Jews are the greediest for the life of this world. They are fully-aware of their evil deeds and hence their evil end. Therefore, they wish to live a little longer. In fact, their desire to live long is greater than the desires of the polytheists (mushrikeen). Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahi ‘anhu commented that polytheists do not believe in resurrection after death, therefore, they would love to enjoy a long life in this world.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says that they desire to live a thousand years. The word yawaddu [يَوَدُّ] is from the root wau-dal-dal which means ‘to love, wish for, desire and long’. The grant of a long life, however, will not save them even a little from the punishment that is due. The word bimuza-zi-hi [بِمُزَحْزِحِهِ] is from the root zay-ha-zay-ha which means ‘to remove, push or thrust away’. They cannot escape the punishment of the Hereafter for their wrongdoings.

LESSON:

This life is a gift of our Creator that has been entrusted to us so that we can do more and more righteous deeds seeking His pleasure alone, and not for some worldly gain. Our goal in this life is to please Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and to prepare ourselves for the greatest reckoning. No matter how many years we live, if we have reached puberty we will be answerable for our deeds. We should ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to put barakah in our lives and time, so that we are able to do more and more righteous deeds (that are accepted), and move from this world of prison to the abode of bliss, in sha Allah.

[A Letter on Preparing for Death]

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala ends the ayah by saying that He knows what His servants are doing. The good and evil all is being noted down in our records and we will be compensated accordingly.

Ayaat 89-90 the Wait and Denial of the Prophet ﷺ

Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 89 to 92, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Surah Baqarah Verse 89-90
Before coming of the Prophet ﷺ the Jews used to invoke Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to send the promised prophet who could save them from the war-mongering Arab pagans.

They used to tell the polytheists, “A Prophet shall be sent just before the end of this world and we, along with him, shall exterminate you, just as the nations of ‘Ad and Iram were exterminated.” They would say, “O Allah! Send the Prophet that we read about in the Torah so that we can torment and kill the disbelievers alongside him.” When Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent the promised prophet and they saw that he was not one of them (he was an Arab), they rejected him and envied the Arabs, even though they knew that he was the Messenger of Allah. They claimed that he has not brought anything that we recognize.

In reply to this, Mu’adh ibn Jabl and Bishr ibn Al-Bara’ bin Ma’rur radhiAllahu ‘anhum used to say, “O Jews! Fear Allah and embrace Islam. You used to invoke Allah for the coming of Muhammad () when we were still disbelievers and you used to tell us that he would come and describe him to us.”

The promised prophet (Muhammad ﷺ) had brought a Book (the Qur’an) from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala that carried tales about the Jews and confirmed what was in the Torah, yet they refused to accept him because he was an Arab and not from their lineage. Because of such an attitude Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said,

“So let the curse of Allah be on the disbelievers.”

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “How bad is that for which they have sold their own selves…” meaning for a paltry gain of this world, they sold the truth for falsehood. They knew that indeed Muhammad ﷺ was the promised prophet and the Book (Qur’an) he has brought confirmed their Torah, yet they hid the truth about him and told the people that he was not the promised one.

A question might arise why the Rabbis rejected him? It was because of their arrogance, stubbornness, and hatred. They considered the Arabs illiterate while held high opinions about themselves. They argued since the Last Messenger is not from them, unlike the earlier prophets, they are not going to believe in him. They chose to disbelieve in him and what he brought (i.e. the Qur’an) going against their earlier covenant with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala of believing in and supporting the Last Messenger. This behavior of theirs is the result of their injustice, envy, and hatred, as Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “…grudging that Allah should reveal of His grace unto whom He wills of His servants.” There is no envy worse than this, therefore, they have drawn on themselves wrath upon wrath.

LESSON:

He who truly seeks guidance does not look at the speaker that what his background is, his skin color, his race and language, how rich or poor he is; rather, he focuses on what is being said and how it benefits him.

Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu commented that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala became angry with them because they ignored some of the Torah and disbelieved in the Prophet that He sent to them. In the past, as we have read, they have disobeyed their own Prophet Musa (Moses) ‘alayhi salaam, and killed some prophets that were sent to them such as Yahya ‘alayhi salaam, son of Zakariya ‘alayhi salaam, and they attempted to kill ‘Eesa (Jesus) ‘alayhi salaam but he was raised to the heavens before they could reach him. Later, they also attempted to kill Muhammad ﷺ through magic and poison.

Ibn Katheer writes it was because of their constant disobedience and disbelieve that they deserved and acquired multiplied anger. Their transgression and arrogance resulted in their disgrace and humiliation in this world and the Hereafter.

Hindrances in Accepting the Truth:
► Baghi
► Ujb (Self-conceit) – Considering oneself better than others. Accepting only that which suits one’s desires and rejecting that which one dislikes.
► Arrogance
► Ghazb – Not accepting something from the other due to a grudge
► Showing-off
► Jealousy – Not accepting something because it was done or said by a person that one despises
► Love for wealth
► Love for status

Do your self-analysis – when you do not accept other’s opinion what is the reason?

[The Diseases of the Hearts and their Cures by Ibn Taimiyyah]

Imam Ahmad narrated that ‘Amr bin Shu’ayb said that his father said that his grandfather said that the Prophet ﷺ said,

“The arrogant people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection in the size of ants, but in the shape of men. Everything shall be above them, because of the humiliation placed on them, until they enter a prison in Jahannam called ‘Bawlas’ where the fire will surround them from above. They shall drink from the puss of the people of the Fire.”

Ayaat 91-92

Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 89 to 92, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Surah Baqarah Verse 91-92
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala highlights another of their wrongdoing, “When it is said to them, ‘Believe in what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘We believe [only] in what was revealed to us.” It is as if to say, it is enough for us to believe in what was revealed to us in the Torah and the Injeel, and this is the path that we choose for ourselves.

If that is really the truth, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala asks, “Then why did you kill the prophets of Allah before, if you are [indeed] believers?”

This means if your claim that you believe in what was revealed to you is true, then why did you kill the Prophets who came to you affirming the Torah’s Law, although you knew they were true Prophets. You killed them simply out of transgression, stubbornness, and injustice with Allah’s Messengers. Therefore, you only follow your lusts, opinions, and desires.

It should be noted that the act of killing the Prophets of Allah was done by the early Jews and not those living in Madina. But they are being reprimanded because they did not consider their forefathers’ act evil. They used to take pride in it.

Prophet Musa ‘alayhi salaam had come to them with clear signs from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala that he was indeed the messenger of Allah and that there was no deity worthy of worship except Allah, yet they disobeyed the Messenger and took calf as their idol. The clear signs (or miracles) mentioned in the ayah refer to the flood, the locusts, lice, frogs, blood, staff and Musa’s hand. His miracles also include parting of the sea, the shade of the clouds in a desert, the manna and quails, the gushing stone, etc.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala calls them Zalimoon for taking a calf as their deity after Musa ‘alayhi salaam went to Mount Tour to speak to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. Shirk (associating partners with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala) is a major sin – a sinner does not commit injustice to others but himself – therefore, they were called Zalimoon i.e. the unjust or the wrongdoers.

Ayaat 87-88 the Killing of the Prophets
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 87 to 88, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Surah Baqarah Verse 87-88
In this ayah Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala describes the insolence of the Children of Israel and their rebellion, defiance and arrogance towards the Prophets ‘alayhi salaam. They were given the Torah that they later changed, distorted its meanings, and defied its commands.

A number of prophets were sent to the Children of Israel, one after another starting from Prophet Musa to Haroon, Dhul-Kifl, Ilyas, Al-Yasah, Dawood, Suleiman, Uzair, Yunus, Zakaria, Yahya and ‘Eesa (peace be upon all of them).

Eesa (Jesus) ‘alayhi salaam was the last prophet to be sent to the Children of Israel. He was sent with some laws that differed with those in the Torah. This is why Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala also sent miracles to support ‘Eesa. By the permission of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala he could bring the dead back to life, form the shape of birds from clay and blow life into them, heal the sick and foretell the Unseen. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala also aided him with Ruh Al-Qudus, and that refers to Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) ‘alayhi salaam. All of these signs testified to the truthfulness of ‘Eesa and what he was sent with. Yet, the Children of Israel became more defiant and envious of him and did not want to differ with even one part of the Torah. Hence, they treated the Prophets in the worst manner, rejecting some of them and killing some of them. All of this occurred because the Prophets used to command the Jews with what differed from their desires and opinions. The Prophets also upheld the rulings of the Torah that the Jews had changed, and this is why it was difficult for them to believe in these Prophets.
Therefore, they rejected the Prophets and killed some of them. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said,

“Is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you kill.”

Az-Zamakhshari commented that notice Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala did not say ‘killed’ because the Jews would still try to kill the Prophet in the future, using poison and magic.

During the illness that preceded his death, the Prophet said,

“I kept feeling the effect of what I ate (from the poisoned sheep) during the day of Khaybar, until now, when it is the time that the aorta will be cut off (meaning when death is near).” [This hadeeth was collected by Al-Bukhari and others.]

Ayah 88
“And they say, ‘Our heart are Ghulf,” meaning they are screened, covered or there is a stamp on them that they don’t comprehend. It is said that Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu commented that it could mean: Our hearts contain every type of knowledge and do not need the knowledge that you (O Muhammad ﷺ) have.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala responds, “Nay, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief,” meaning the reason they cannot comprehend is because they have been expelled from Allah’s Rahmah (mercy) as was said in Surah An-Nisa ayah 155.

LESSON:

When we are unable to understand an ayah or a religious ruling we must check our heart. We must ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to open up our hearts to His religion because he who is blocked from understanding the Book of Allah or a matter of the Deen is actually deprived of His Mercy.
We learn in a hadeeth that when Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala desires goodness for a person he expands their heart for understanding religion.
On the other hand, those who are engaged in sins and do not think about their Creator or His commands, their hearts are blocked from understanding religious matters.

We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for His mercy and the knowledge of His Deen, ameen.

Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 84 to 86, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Surah Baqarah Verse 84-86
Before the Prophet migrated to Madina, the tribes of idol worshipers and Jews lived there. These tribes were the allies of one another; they had pledged that they will support their respective tribe whenever the war erupted between the tribes, this meant fighting against their own (Jew vs Jew) which was prohibited in their law.

There were two tribes of the idol worshipers: Aws and Khazraj, and three tribes of the Jews: Banu Qaynuqa’, Banu An-Nadeer and Banu Qurayzah.

Banu Qaynuqa’ and Banu An-Nadeer were the allies of the idol worshiping tribe Khazraj, while Banu Qurayzah was the ally of Aws.

When war erupted between Aws and Khazraj, their respective Jewish allies would assist them. In doing so, sometimes the Jews will kill their own Jewish brethren, drive them out of their homes, loot their belongings, and capture them as prisoners. When the war ended, they would get their imprisoned brethrens released according to the rulings of the Torah. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reminds them that they had testified to this covenant. It is not as if they were unaware of it or it was a new command. This is why He said,

“Then do you believe in a part of the Scripture and reject the rest?”
meaning you had taken a promise to not shed the blood of your people, expel them from their homes or help another party in fighting against your brother, but you went against the command.
Later, when your brethren were captured you brought money to get them released stating you are acting on the Torah. You ransom them according to the rulings of the Torah, yet kill them (while helping the enemy) while the Torah forbade you from killing them and from expelling them from their homes. The Torah also commanded that you should not aid the polytheists and those who associate with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in the worship, against your brethren.
You do all this to acquire the life of this world. You implement the Torah sometimes and defy it at other times, although you believed in the Torah and knew what you were doing was wrong. Is it that you believe in part of the Scripture and reject some part for a worldly gain?

So, what should be the recompense for such people who believe in some part of the Book and reject the other? Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says that for them is disgrace in this life, and in the Hereafter severe punishment awaits them.

LESSONS:

What about us? How committed are we to the commands of the Qur’an? Do we believe in some of the commands and reject the others?

Make a list of all the commands from ayah 1 till this ayah and note how many commands you follow and how many you have been ignoring. The first command that we learn is to establish prayer.
Establishing prayer, as we learned, means praying it at its appointed time (not when my heart wills or work allows), praying it in congregation (for men), praying with proper ablution (leaving no part that is to be washed, dry), and in the way that Prophet taught us. So, am I acting on this first command? Is there a share for the needy in my provision? Do I share whatever resources and skills I have with others, or am I stingy?

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says that He is not unaware of what we do. The punishment for defying the laws and commandments of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is in both the worlds. By giving more preference to the joys and paltry profits of this world we are being negligent of what awaits us in the Hereafter. We might find like-minded people in this world who deceive us into enjoying temporary pleasures of this world, but in the Hereafter there will be no helpers. Each soul will taste what it has earned. The torment will be eternal and there will be no refuge from it.

We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for His mercy, and to bless us wisdom with which we can make right decisions in our life, ameen.

Aurat ki Aazadi nahi Aurat tak pahunchane ki Aazadi Chahiye. | Islamc Post in Urdu

Aaj kaise kaise log Auraton ki Aazadi chahate hai, Islamc Post in Urdu, my body my choice in Islam, ruling on women in Islam, Islamic Urdu Roman Post

Yah nayi Nasal kya apni Zamin ke liye ladegi , jo Saloon ke yahan Bal kat me masroof hai?
