Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 74

2:74 Al-Baqara

Then, after that, your hearts were hardened and became as stones or even worse in hardness. And indeed, there are stones out of which rivers gush forth, and indeed, there are of them (stones) which split asunder so that water flows from them, and indeed, there are of them (stones) which fall down for fear of Allah. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.

Surah Baqarah Verse 74
☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala criticizes the Children of Israel that they witnessed His tremendous Signs including bringing the dead back to life, and yet they were not moved.

☘️Why did their hearts harden? It was due to their continuous disobedience and mockery of the ayaat of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. When a person disobeys Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, turns away from His commands, argues in the religious matters, then the heart hardens. No goodness is left in such a heart and it is blocked from receiving guidance.

☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala compares the hearts of the Children of Israel to stones and forbids us from imitating them. It is because of their hearts being hard like stones that they were unable to believe in Muhammad ﷺ despite witnessing all the signs and acknowledging that indeed it was him mentioned in their Book.

☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala tells us about the different types of stones:

Type One
“And indeed, there are stones out of which rivers gush forth…”
Imagine a person whose heart is filled with the reverence and fear of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. He hears the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala or remembers Him and tears flow from his eyes. He is a pious person with an extremely soft heart. Yatafajr [يَتَفَجَّرُ] is gushing forth on a large scale. Such a person only spreads goodness. He leaves no good deed behind and tries to serve Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala with whatever skills or resources he has. May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala grant us such a heart, ameen.

☘️Type Two
“…and indeed, there are of them (stones) which split asunder so that water flows from them…”
Imagine a person who is distant from Allah, but an incident in life causes his heart to split asunder just like the land splits in an earthquake. They breakdown and turn to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
Some people are going on with their lives without thinking about the Creator or the purpose of their creation. Then, something happens in their life, a divorce, death of a loved one or something else and they collapse. Their collapsing is only a mean to rise back up. It is a wake-up call from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala – a form of His favor to help us correct our ways before we are held accountable in the Hereafter. It is a test to take people out of their sweet slumber and allow them to reflect on the reality of this life.

☘️Type Three
“…and indeed, there are of them (stones) which fall down for fear of Allah…”
Imagine a person who is a man of his own mind. He does not blindly follow people, but when he is shown evidence from the Qur’an or Sunnah, he surrenders. When the stones have the awareness of their Creator they fall down, for example, land sliding or avalanches. Apparently, they are strong-willed, but when they hear a command of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala they submit.

☘️Type Four
There are people whose hearts have hardened. They have sinned so much that no goodness is left in them. When they are not bothered about the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala too chooses not to guide them. Remember, one must have the yearning to be guided and to seek what pleases Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. If we are not concerned about the Master and the Hereafter, and we are disobedient and rebellious, we will be left on our own. May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala protect us and not deprive us of His Love and Rahmah (mercy), ameen.

☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala ends the ayah saying that He is not unaware of what we do. If He has not broken us down or guided us that does not mean He does not see us. He is Al-Aleem, Al-Khabeer and Al-Baseer, He knows and sees everything.

Verse 72 + 73

2:72 Al-Baqara

So We said: "Strike him (the dead man) with a piece of it (the cow)." Thus Allah brings the dead to life and shows you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) so that you may understand.

Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 73
☘️The reason that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala commanded them to slaughter a cow was to settle the dispute about the murdered man. They were blaming one another for the murder. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala instructed then to strike a piece of the cow on the dead man. The scholars say either the Children of Israel were commanded to strike any piece of the cow or a specific piece such as, striking the leg of the cow on the leg of the dead man. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala does not explicitly tell us because knowing it will not benefit us in any way.

☘️”Thus does Allah bring the dead to life,” meaning this incident not only settled their dispute, but Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala also showed them how He is going to resurrect the dead in the Hereafter. This was because, as mentioned earlier, their belief about the Hereafter had gone corrupt. They had doubts about the resurrection. And Allah knows best.

☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala made this incident a proof against the Jews that the Resurrection shall definitely occur.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala mentioned His bringing the dead back to life in five instances in Surah Al-Baqarah: in ayaat 55 and 56 , in the story of the cow and in the story of those who escaped death in their land while they were numbering in the thousands. He also mentioned the story of the Prophet who passed by a village that was destroyed, the story of Ibraheem ‘alayhi salaam and the four birds, and the land that comes back to life after it has died. All these incidents and stories alert us to the fact that bodies shall again become whole, after they were rotten. The proof of Resurrection is also reiterated in Allah’s statement below.

“And a sign for them is the dead land. We give it life, and We bring forth from it grains, so that they eat thereof. And We have made therein gardens of date palms and grapes, and We have caused springs of water to gush forth therein. So that they may eat of the fruit thereof ـ and their hands made it not. Will they not then give thanks?” (Ya-Seen 36:33-35)

🔮May Allah subhanahu wa t’ala allow us to live and die on the correct aqeedah, and protect us from corruption, ameen.

He [Musa (Moses)] said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to till the soil nor water the fields, sound, having no other colour except bright yellow.' " They said, "Now you have brought the truth." So they slaughtered it though they were near to not doing it.
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 69 to 71, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Surah Baqarah Verse 71
☘️The Children of Israel continue with their questions about the cow. They asked what color it should be. Musa ‘alayhi salaam replied that it should be bright in its color and pleasing to the beholder. They asked for further description claiming that since cows are plentiful they all look alike. They added in sha Allah (if Allah wills) at the end that if you further describe the cow to us then in sha Allah we will be guided. Musa ‘alayhi salaam further described it for them. He said it should be a cow not used in farming or for watering purposes. Rather, it is honorable and fair looking.

☘️Qatadah said that sound (or free from fault) [مُّسَلَّمَةٌ] means that the cow does not suffer from any defects. It should have no color on it except the bright yellow color.

☘️The Children of Israel realized that despite their asking multiple questions the command was not going to be lifted. The matter was only being made more difficult for them. Finally, they gave in and said, “Now you have come with the truth.” Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it,” meaning they slaughtered it although they did not want to.

☘️Ibn Katheer writes that even after all the questions and answers about the cow’s description, the Jews were still reluctant to slaughter the cow. This part of the Qur’an criticized them for their behavior because their only goal was to be stubborn and this is why they nearly did not slaughter the cow.

☘️This incident teaches us that one should not delay acting on the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. When a person hears a command and acts on it then the matter is made easy for him. But when a person asks unnecessary questions, makes excuses or delays it then either that matter is made difficult for him or he loses his chance to do a righteous deed. One must not procrastinate in matters of goodness. We should be the forerunners and not wait for others to take the first step, so that we can follow them.

🔮If there is anything that one must compete in then, it should be the pleasures of the Hereafter. “Race towards good deeds,” (2: 148).

Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 68

2:68 Al-Baqara

They said, "Call upon your Lord for us that He may make plain to us what it is!" He said, "He says, 'Verily, it is a cow neither too old nor too young, but (it is) between the two conditions', so do what you are commanded."
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 68, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 68
☘️The Children of Israel started asking unnecessary questions hoping that they will not be asked to do what they were being told. It is similar to someone asking us for water and we ask, “Do you want it in a glass or a jug?” The person answers. Then we ask, “Do you want it in metal glass or China glass?” Then we ask, “Do you want it hot or cold?” The person only asked for water, why ask so many questions?

☘️Also notice how the Children of Israel addressed Musa ‘alayhi salaam. Each time they asked a question, they said, “Call upon your Lord…” [رَبَّكَ] they didn’t even acknowledge Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala as their Lord.

☘️And this is how many people handle the du’as. They ask others to make du’as for them claiming that they are too sinful to have their du’as answered or just out of negligence because they do not offer Salah. Who could be lazier than a person who cannot even make du’a for himself?

☘️Learn to make d’ua for yourself because Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala loves to hear His servant invoke Him. When you learn how to make d’ua and build a regular relationship with Him, you no longer have to ask people to pray for you. By praying to Him you have shown you love Him. And when a servant loves the Creator, not only does He love you back, but He inspires the creation to love you too.

☘️The Jews’ way: Rabbaka [رَبَّكَ] “Your Lord…”
The Muslims’ way: Rabbana [رَبَّنَا] “Our Lord…”

☘️The Children of Israel said, “Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is,” meaning make its description clear to us. The word yubayyin [يُبَيِّن] is from the root ba-ya-noon. Bayyan means ‘to explicitly tell something, to make something apparent, plain or clear’.

☘️Musa ‘alayhi salaam replied that it should be neither too old nor too young rather it should be in between the two stages meaning at an age when it is the strongest and fittest. Right after this Musa ‘alayhi salaam says, “…so do what you are commanded,” meaning stop asking unnecessary questions and honor the command.

☘️Talking too much hinders one from taking action. Sometimes we share our plans with others and get so exhausted talking that we no more have the energy to actually do it. The time that could have been spent on the project has been wasted in talking. Prioritize your life. Do what’s more important, first.

🔮Talking too much also deprives us of khushu’ in the prayer. The conversations in our head keep distracting us. Talking too much also hardens hearts. Sometimes we utter statements that we regret later. We must learn to talk less and engage our tongues more in the remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. A person must speak only when spoken to and say that which is true and beneficial.

Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 67

2:67 Al-Baqara

And (remember) when Musa (Moses) said to his people: "Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you make fun of us?" He said, "I take Allah's Refuge from being among Al-Jahilun (the ignorants or the foolish)."
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 67, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 67
☘️An Israeli man had been killed and there was no information about the murderer. While the people were arguing Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent a command to Musa ‘alayhi salaam to instruct his people to slaughter a cow. The slaughtering of the cow was a mean for discovering the identity of the murderer.

☘️Ibn Abi Hatim recorded ‘Ubaydah As-Salmani saying, “There was a man from among the Children of Israel who was impotent. He had substantial wealth, and only a nephew who would inherit from him. So his nephew killed him and moved his body at night, placing it at the doorstep of a certain man. The next morning, the nephew cried out for revenge, and the people took up their weapons and almost fought each other. The wise men among them said, ‘Why would you kill each other, while the Messenger of Allah is still among you?’ So they went to Musa and mentioned the matter to him and Musa (‘alayhi salaam) said, ‘Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.’”

☘️The Children of Israel asked if he was making fun of them. Prophet Musa replied that was not of the ignorant or the foolish. They disputed and asked unnecessary questions, hoping that by doing so perhaps they would no more be required to carry out the command. But no! Because of their asking unnecessary questions the matter was made more difficult for them.

☘️”Ubaydah As-Salmani said, “Had they not disputed, it would have been sufficient for them to slaughter any cow. However, they disputed, and the matter was made more difficult for them, until they ended up looking for the specific cow that they were later ordered to slaughter. They found the designated cow only with a man who owned that cow.
He said, ‘By Allah! I will only sell it for its skin’s fill of gold.’ So they paid the cow’s fill of its skin in gold, slaughtered it and touched the dead man with a part of it. He stood up, and they asked him, ‘Who killed you?’ He said, ‘That man,’ and pointed to his nephew. He died again, and his nephew was not allowed to inherit him. Thereafter, whoever committed murder for the purpose of gaining inheritance was not allowed to inherit.” And Allah knows best.

☘️The Stubbornness of the Jews
The Children of Israel asked too many questions from their messengers. When they were commanded to do something they would not carry out the command right away, rather they asked unnecessary questions. Because of their stubbornness, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala made the tasks difficult for them. Had they slaughtered any cow, it would have been sufficient for them.

☘️Their stubbornness also led them to disobey or misbehave with the Prophets of Allah. When Musa ‘alayhi salaam conveyed them the command of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, they asked if he was making fun of them. Prophets and Messengers of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala do not make fun of their people. Then why did the Children of Israel say such a thing? It is because they had lived under the slavery of the Egyptians who worshiped idols. One of their idols was cow. Living with the Egyptians, the reverence of the cows had seeped into the hearts of the Children of Israel. Therefore, they could not accept slaughtering something that they revered.

☘️Become serious in the study of Deen. It is not play and amusement. True believers are those who hear a command of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and humbly submit. They do not ask: Why Allah? Why should I do it? Accepting hijab, leaving haram jobs and relationships, spending in the way of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala becomes easy for them.

☘️A Da’ee (caller to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and His religion) must be a serious and mature person.

His responsibility is to educate people. He should not make fun of, taunt or criticize the people coming to his gatherings. People from all backgrounds attend Islamic lectures and gatherings, the Da’ee should not look at how they are dressed, how they talk, the questions they ask, etc. He should be patient, forgiving and a good listener. Parents too should be careful about how they speak to their children. Sometimes parents shatter the confidence by laughing at or criticizing the questions that the children ask. Understand your role as an adult and a leader.

🔮Those who laugh at others, judge or criticize others, especially those who are lesser in knowledge or status, are actually foolish and ignorant themselves. A knowledgeable person fears Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, has taqwa and wishes well for all people.

Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 66
☘️In these ayaat Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reminds the Jews of what their forefathers had done. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala had chosen one day of the week for the Children of Israel to do nothing other than worshiping Him. The Children of Israel, who were after the paltry gains of this world, however breached the sanctity of this day (Sabbath).

☘️A small valley of the fishermen whose main source of livelihood was fishing would place nets, ropes and artificial pools of water the night before the Sabbath. On the Saturday, when they were pretending to be busy in their worship, the fish would come and get caught in the ropes and nets. The fishermen would collect the fish after the Sabbath ended. They thought they were deceiving Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, but who can deceive the Creator?

☘️The Sabbath day was a test for them. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala had planned that fish would come in abundance. As a punishment for what they had done, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala changed them from humans into monkeys.

☘️Because they changed the command of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala (or tried to play with it), Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala changed them from humans into monkeys. Therefore, we must be really carefully about our attitude towards the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. We should be the ones who say, “We heard and we obeyed,” and not follow what our nafs inspires us to do.

☘️When this incident happened their nation was split into three groups.
Group One: Those who caught the fish;
Group Two: Those who stopped them and;
Group Three: Those who said: Why do you stop them? They are not going to listen.

☘️When Allah’s punishment descended both group one and three were punished while group two was saved. Why? It is because they stopped their people from committing the wrong. They acted upon ‘forbid the evil’. Why did they stop them when group one was unwilling to listen? In ayah 164 of Surah Al-A’raf it appears:

مَعْذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ
“In order to be free from guilt before your Lord.” (7: 164)

☘️This tells us when we see a wrong act we must step up and stop it by our hands or tongues. If we don’t and transgression continues, then we too will taste the punishment. May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala protect us from His punishment and allow us to become strong Muslims, ameen.

☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “So We made this punishment an example…” meaning for the people of the village who violated the sanctity of the Sabbath and for the other villages. They were an example for those who lived during their time as well as a reminder for those to come, by preserving their story. Therefore, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,
“And a lesson for the Muttaqeen (the pious/Allah-conscious).”

☘️It means the torment and punishment that this village suffered was a result of indulging in Allah’s prohibitions and their deceit. Hence, those who have taqwa should be aware of their evil behavior, so that what occurred to this village does not befall them as well.

☘️Many people approach the Qur’an not to understand it but to find a loophole or conduct debates. A popular debate is about hijab. They argue: Where is the word hijab mentioned. If one studies Surah An-Nur and Surah Al-Ahzab, one can find how explicit Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has been about hijab and free-mixing of men and women. He teaches us social etiquette, yet we choose to deny them. Some of the so-called progressive Muslims claim these commands were for a backward, barbaric society of Arabia and are no more applicable today. If that is the case, then why there is so much corruption in today’s world? Let us not talk about the ayaat of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala without proper knowledge. Let us study the Deen and ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to humble our hearts, ameen.

☘️People alter the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala as a way to escape its implementation. By not implementing, we are only doing wrong to ourselves. May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala protect us, ameen.

🔮Qur’an is a source of guidance for those who seek guidance. It is not a Book for conducting arguments. May He allow us to honor the Book as it should be honored, ameen.

Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 64

2:64 Al-Baqara

Then after that you turned away. Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allah upon you, indeed you would have been among the losers.

Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 64
☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “Then you turned away after that.” Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala raised the mountain above their heads and commanded them to hold fast to the teachings of their Torah, seeing the mountain right above their heads they feared the safety of their lives and immediately surrendered. But when the mountain was placed back they returned to their usual lives of disobedience. They deviated and broke their pledge.

☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers.” The favor mentioned is Allah’s forgiveness and the sending of the Prophets and Messengers to them. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala continued to favor them despite their breach of the covenant.

☘️What is our attitude towards the Qur’an?
When we are going through a test, we open the Qur’an, start a rigorous reading, invite people over to read the Qur’an for us, etc. and when that test is over we return to our usual lives of disobedience and ignorance.

☘️When the mountain of calamity is above our heads we surrender (or so we pledge). Once the mountain is off our heads, we turn back to who we really are.

☘️We can invite people to our homes for wazeefas, reading the Qur’an for the dead , but cannot invite people to our homes or gather at some other place to read and understand the Book of Allah?

☘️How Merciful is Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala that He has not dropped a mountain on our heads – He continues to forgive us, gives us respite that we might change.

☘️Let us stop playing with the Qur’an and give it its due right. Let us become the People of the Qur’an, study it, understand it, remember its ayaat, and teach it to others.

☘️The Prophet said, “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” [Bukhari no. 5027]

☘️He also said, “Allah has His own people among mankind.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who are they?” He said, “The people of the Qur’an, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him.” [Ibn Majah no. 215 (Hasan)]

☘️Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah said, “Allah’s Messenger shrouded every two martyrs of Uhud in one piece of cloth and then he would ask, ‘Which of them knew more Qur’an?’ When one of them was pointed out he would put him first in the grave.” [Bukhari no. 1347]

🔮Let us not be neglectful of the Book of Allah. Those who do not know it must commit to studying it with a proper scholar. Those who know it must honor it by displaying the traits pointed out by ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’oud radhiAllahu ‘anhu.

Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 63

2:63 Al-Baqara

And (O Children of Israel, remember) when We took your covenant and We raised above you the Mount (saying): "Hold fast to that which We have given you, and remember that which is therein so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2).
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 63, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 63
☘️In this ayaat, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reminds the Children of Israel of the pledges, covenants and promises that He took from them.

☘️While taking this pledge Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala raised the mountain (at-Tur) above their heads, so that they affirm it and abide by it with sincerity and seriousness. This incident is also mentioned in Surah Al-A’raf ayah 171.

“Take what We have given you…” means hold fast to the commands of Torah. They were not simply required to accept the Book but also live by it. They were to keep referring to the Book of Allah in their day-to-day matters. They were not supposed to blindly follow their forefathers or their traditions. They were to know what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala expects them to do in their daily matters.

☘️As mentioned earlier, Surah Al-Baqarah is not a criticism on the Jews rather it contains lessons for us, the Muslims as well. We start studying the Book as soon as we turn four or when someone embraces Islam. Many of us do lengthy Qur’an courses but when it comes to our routine lives we forget to implement the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
Families are supposed to live in mutual harmony, but how many homes have toxic environments?
We know that we are forbidden to work in a bank or deal with them. But how many of us decline the opportunity when we are offered a job at the bank? How many of us hoard money in saving accounts expecting petty profit rather than depositing it with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in the form of charity? How many of us truly understand the concept of being at war with Allah and His Messenger ? It is mentioned in the Qur’an that the women have a share in the inheritance. How many of us remember to give the daughter, the wife or sister her share?

☘️Why should one adhere to the Book?
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “…that perhaps you may become righteous…” Taqwa is what is going to save us in this life and the Hereafter. We cannot acquire taqwa if we do not hold fast to the Book. If we don’t study the Book, understand and remember its commands how can we conduct our lives according to how Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala wants?

☘️Learn the Qur’an, understand its meaning, and remember its commands in your routine matters if you wish to enjoy the blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in this world and the next.

☘️Qur’an cannot be understood by our personal interpretations. To understand an ayah we first look for similar ayaat in the Qur’an. Then we look at the Prophetic traditions and study how the Prophet explained the ayah. We then have the sayings of the Companions radhiAllahu ‘anhum and the exegesis of the Tabi’een and so on. Be careful of your sources of knowledge. Ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to lead you to the truth and protect you from falsehood.

☘️The Qur’an is for each one of us. We should read it. We should understand its meaning. We should not keep the knowledge to ourselves but teach it to others.

☘️Therefore, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said,
“Hold fast to that which We have given you…”
Not just hold fast to it but…
“…and remember that which is therein…”
meaning implement its commands. Remember them whenever you have to take a decision in life.
When it comes to trying out a new recipe we go exactly by the recipe card. When it comes to fixing or setting up a machine we go exactly by the manual, then why is it that we believe we can live our lives without the Manual that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has given us?

☘️ASK YOURSELF:
► What do I do all day?
► How much time do I give to the Qur’an? Does the Qur’an even has any portion in my daily routine?
► Do I also try to understand the meaning or is my only focus on completing the recitation?

🔮Some people ask is it obligatory to study the Qur’an daily. Such people should be asked: Is it obligatory to daily check your social media accounts, watch television, WhatsApp or talk to people? Why do we only have to compromise when it comes to the matters of the Deen?

Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 62

2:62 Al-Baqara

Verily! Those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 62, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 62
☘️After Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala described the condition – and punishment – of those who defy His commands, fall into His prohibitions and transgress set limits by committing prohibited acts, He stated that the earlier nations who were righteous and obedient received the rewards for their good deeds. This shall be the case, until the Day of Judgment. Therefore, whoever follows the unlettered Messenger and Prophet shall acquire eternal happiness and shall neither fear from what will happen in the future nor become sad for what has been lost in the past.

☘️The reason behind the disobedience of the Children of Israel was that their belief about the Hereafter had gone corrupt. They believed because they are the People of the Book – the Chosen people they are certainly going to Paradise. They called themselves the Children of Allah and considered themselves extra special, as today some Muslims falsely believe as well.

☘️By revealing this ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala clarifies the misconception. No person will enter Jannah solely based on their belief or actions. The correct belief (believe in the Oneness of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala) followed with the righteous actions (done as per the Sunnah of the Prophet ) will lead us to Jannah. We cannot claim to be entering Jannah because we are Muslims. We must perform righteous deeds as taught by the Prophet ﷺ; we cannot invent our own forms of worship. Our deeds must conform to the Sunnah. Similarly, for one’s righteous deeds to be accepted their belief has to be right as well. A person who does not believe in Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala but actively participates in charity drives, all his deeds will be rejected.

☘️”Ali ibn Abi Talhah narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu that after this ayah 2:62, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala revealed ayah 85 of Surah Aal-Imran.

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers,” (3: 85).

☘️This statement by Ibn ‘Abbas indicates that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala does not accept any deed or work from anyone unless it conforms to the Law of Muhammad ﷺ that is after he was sent. Before that, every person who followed the guidance of his own prophet was on the correct path, following the correct guidance and was saved. When Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent Muhammad ﷺ as the Last and Final Prophet and Messenger to all of the Children of Adam, mankind was required to believe in him, obey him and refrain from what he prohibited them; those who do this are true believers. The Ummah of Muhammad was called Mumineen (believers), because of the depth of their faith and certainty, and because they believe in all of the previous Prophets and matters of the Unseen.

☘️Why the Christians were called Nasara?
In Surah As-Saf it appears (http://quran.com/61/14),

“O you who believe! Be you helpers (in the Cause) of Allah as said ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), to Al-Hawariun (the disciples): ‘Who are my helpers (in the Cause) of Allah?’ Al-Hawarieen (the disciples) said: ‘We are Allah’s helpers’ (i.e. we will strive in His Cause!)…” (61: 14)

☘️It was said that they were called Nasara because they inhabited a land called An-Nasirah (Nazareth), as Qatadah, Ibn Jurayj and Ibn ‘Abbas were reported to have said. Nasara is certainly plural of Nasran.

☘️The Sabians
There is a difference of opinion over the identity of the Sabians. Sufyan Ath-Thawri said that Layth bin Abu Sulaym said that Mujahid said that, “The Sabians are between the Majus, the Jews and the Christians.
They do not have a specific religion.” Similar is reported from Ibn Abi Najih. Similar statements were attributed to `Ata’ and Sa`id bin Jubayr. They (others) say that the Sabians are a sect among the People of the Book who used to read the Zabur (Psalms), others say that they are a people who worshipped the angels or the stars. It appears that the closest opinion to the truth, and Allah knows best, is Mujahid’s statement and those who agree with him like Wahb bin Munabbih, that the Sabians are neither Jews nor Christians nor Majus nor polytheists.
Rather, they did not have a specific religion that they followed and enforced, because they remained living according to their Fitrah (instinctual nature). This is why the idolators used to call whoever embraced Islam a `Sabi’, meaning, that he abandoned all religions that existed on the earth. Some scholars stated that the Sabians are those who never received a message by any Prophet. And Allah knows best.

🔮Our salvation in the Hereafter does not depend on our association with a particular group. We must correct our belief and stick to the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ. We should also stop labeling each other Kafir and rather work on spreading the word of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, helping ourselves and others become well-pleasing to Him.

Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 61

2:61 Al-Baqara

And (remember) when you said, "O Musa (Moses)! We cannot endure one kind of food. So invoke your Lord for us to bring forth for us of what the earth grows, its herbs, its cucumbers, its Fum (wheat or garlic), its lentils and its onions." He said, "Would you exchange that which is better for that which is lower? Go you down to any town and you shall find what you want!" And they were covered with humiliation and misery, and they drew on themselves the Wrath of Allah. That was because they used to disbelieve the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah and killed the Prophets wrongfully. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress the bounds (in their disobedience to Allah, i.e. commit crimes and sins).
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 61, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 61
☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reminds the Children of Israel of His favors upon them. He sent down the manna and quails which was a good, pure, beneficial easily acquired food and yet, they were ungrateful. They demanded that the fresh food being sent from the heavens be replaced with that which the earth grew. Living on same kind of food every day was not possible for them. They missed their old lifestyle and demanded variety.

☘️The Children of Israel provided a long list of items that they desired. A person who has no purpose in life searches for variety. He is someone who easily gets bored with what he has and desires change. Not only is this being ungrateful for what one has but such desires keep one restless and unfulfilled.

☘️Prophet Musa’s reply is interesting. He asks, “Would you exchange what is better for what is less?” Clearly, the food being sent from the heavens was much better than what the earth grows. They did not have to work to earn a living and buy food. They did have to fetch or cook food. They did not have to plan what to cook today. Ask the ladies, who spend considerable amount of time fidgeting over this thought. Despite being blessed, the Children of Israel were ungrateful. And so are we! When we forget what we have or become discontent with it we are being ungrateful of the many favors of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala upon us. By consistently being in search for change or variety, we waste many precious hours and hard-earned money going after that which pleases our heart. We forget whatever this world has to offer is temporary pleasure and what is in the Hereafter is better and lasting.

☘️Alteration was in the blood of the Children of Israel. They changed the Words of Allah, His commands, His religion and now blessings too. A person who is always seeking change is inconsistent, lacks steadfastness and is unpredictable. This person has no purpose in life. The main thing that the Prophet ﷺ taught the Companions radhiAllahi ‘anhum was steadfastness and to be men of principles. They were not slaves to their moods or desires. They remained consistent in the worship of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and in striving in His cause. They did not come with excuses such as, “Today, I am not feeling well. Let me skip my prayer, my class or going out in the Cause of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.”

☘️On the other hand, when we look at ourselves, we cannot quote many instances when we have been consistent. We lack consistency in worship and striving in the Cause of Allah. We lack commitment to religion, yet, we are so dearly committed to the charms of this world.

☘️We give ourselves many excuses for not doing much in the Cause of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala but have we also ever provided ourselves excuses for not doing well in the dunya? We want the exceptional for our dunya and will exert ourselves in achieving that. Yet, we callously throw our Hereafter behind our backs because we lack time or required skill. It is not that we lack ‘time’ rather it is the ‘commitment’ and steadfastness that we lack. Let us ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to make us strong, productive and committed Muslims. Let us not throw our Hereafter out of our sights. It IS what we have to strive for.

☘️Prophet Musa ‘alayhi salaam helps us find the root cause of our slacking in the Deen. We exchange what is better with that which is inferior. Clearly, the Hereafter is better than this inferior world. But because the world means so much to us that we compromise on our worship and learning Deen. Let us commit to change ourselves and gradually distance ourselves from the delusional life of this world. Let us take out the laghw (the unnecessary and non-beneficial) from our lives to give more time to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and His Deen.

☘️Another example of preferring the inferior over better is sleeping late, watching television, spending time on social media, or attending a late night wedding and then missing Fajr at its appointed time.

☘️Don’t miss out on the lasting rewards of the Hereafter over temporary delights of this world. Put the Hereafter before this world.

☘️After such a demand, the Children of Israel were instructed to go down to any city and they will find in abundance what they had been asking for. Prophet Musa refused to supplicate to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for them because it was an inferior choice that they made. Ibn Katheer writes since their request was the result of boredom and arrogance and since fulfilling it was unnecessary, their request was denied.

Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 60

2:60 Al-Baqara

And (remember) when Musa (Moses) asked for water for his people, We said: "Strike the stone with your stick." Then gushed forth therefrom twelve springs. Each (group of) people knew its own place for water. "Eat and drink of that which Allah has provided and do not act corruptly, making mischief on the earth."
Tafseer Surah Baqarah, Surah Baqarah explanation in English, Surah Baqarah 60, Surah Baqarah in English Translation, Tafseer Quran, baqarah Ayah
Tafseer Surah Baqarah Verse 60
☘️Prophet Musa ‘alayhi salaam like any other prophet of Allah was extremely kind and compassionate towards his people and his nation. However he did not respond with the same courtesy. They kept disobeying the instructions of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and demanded one thing after another. After wandering in the Sinai desert as a punishment, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala was still Merciful towards them. He sheltered them with the clouds and provided food from the heavens. Yet, they were not grateful. In ayaat 60-62, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala narrates to us some more of His favors on the Children of Israel.

☘️Upon his people’s request Prophet Musa supplicated to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for water. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala instructed him to strike his staff on a stone and water will be made available. Prophet Musa followed the instructions and twelve springs burst out. There was a designated spring for each of his tribe.

☘️The gushing forth of twelve springs equal to the number of tribes shows the organization in Allah’s work. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala teaches us that when we work in crowds we must work as a team. The roles and responsibilities of each member must be pre-defined so that later there are no confusions and arguments. Had there been only one spring and twelve tribes to serve, can you imagine the chaos that would have emerged?

☘️Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then says, “Eat and drink from the provision of Allah…,” we should know how to fulfill our needs from the permissible and pure provision that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has provided for us. We should not beg, steal or be jealous of what others have. Rather, we should ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to bless us from His unlimited Bounty.

☘️We also learn that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala puts no restrictions on us other than that the food should be halal (lawful) and tayab (pure). He is more concerned about our health than us. We feed our bodies junk while Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala wants us to eat healthy and nutritious. Moreover, we learn that there is no piety in not using the blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. He wants us to take benefit from them but at the same time not become ungrateful or extravagant. Remember to thank Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala whenever you are blessed with something.

☘️While we are to use the blessings, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reminds the Children of Israel and us, “…and do not act corruptly, making mischief on the earth.” Many a times when people are blessed with something instead of being humble and grateful they turn arrogant and condescending. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala does not like those who spread mischief on the earth. Make du’a to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to never make you and your loved ones corrupt or mischievous, ameen. In this ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has taught a life’s principle.

☘️We must learn to discipline our lives and not create fasad in whichever role we might be.

☘️Fasad (mischief) is spread by: Disobedience, ingratitude, impatience, greed, jealousy and arrogance. Look for these traits in yourself, and ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to cleanse you of the diseases of the heart, ameen.

☘️Shukr at the Time of going to Bed

“All praise is for Allah, Who fed us and gave us drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them.

☘️Shukr at the Time of waking up

“All praise is for Allah who restored to me my health and returned my soul and has allowed me to remember Him.”

☘️When a person’s sins increase, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala snatches their blessings and descends his punishment. Because the Children of Israel changed the word and command of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala replaced the promised blessing with punishment. We should, therefore, be very careful about our words and attitude. We should never mock or challenge the command of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. May He guide us and reform what is bad in us, ameen.

☘️While the Day of Judgment is the real day of recompense, in this world too Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala keeps showing us our mistakes. These are wake-up calls for those who need and should repent. Upon realizing one’s mistake, one should not procrastinate repentance; rather he should repent and turn to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

☘️Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that Sa’d bin Malik, Usamah bin Zayd and Khuzaymah bin Thabit said that the Messenger of Allah salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said,
“The plague is a Rijz, a punishment with which Allah punished those before you.”

☘️In addition, the basis of this hadeeth was collected in the Two Saheehs,
“If you hear of the plague in a land, then do not enter it.”
